Top Gear’s magazine will be launching in South Africa towards the end of October for a special November launch issue. The iconic automotive television programme’s publication will be hitting the newsstands following a licensing agreement between Media24 Magazines and BBC Magazines. This is very exciting news for all automotive enthusiasts and fans of the biggest motoring media brand in the world.
The announcement was made by Media24 Magazine’s CEO John Relihan who is looking forward to working with BBC Magazines “in bringing this highly enriched experience in motoring magazine journalism to South Africa.”
Top Gear SA will be edited by the former editor of topCar magazine, Pierre Steyn, whose position is now available at Media24’s other automotive title.
A personal fan of Top Gear, Steyn commented on the huge popularity of the television programme amongst a cross section of South Africans and emphasized the magazine’s ability to deliver on its brand promise “with careful attention to not simply repeat TV content.”
Steyn goes on to mention that “Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May will play a vital role in the magazine’s content as all three contribute monthly columns and features and rotate the Editor’s letter between them.”
It’s important to recognize that there is a very clear distinction between the current topCar magazine and the new Top Gear Magazine. Cherlene Beukes, general manager: Lifestyle Magazines at Media24, has stressed that while topCar is positioned as a consumer magazine with views from the showroom to the consumer, Top Gear is motoring entertainment at its very best.
The November launch issue of the Top Gear SA magazine will be available from 24 October at a cover price of R29.95
Speed and Sound HQ – We like putting together different kinds of issues for you guys. Every now and then we add a theme of sorts to an issue and showcase various cars and tech features pertaining to that theme. If you actually read any of the text on the cover instead of simply drooling over the insane car, you’d know this is a dedicated four-wheel drive issue. I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t easy setting this up, we had loads of obstacles chucked our way… The main one being time. Out of all the monster cars we have on offer for you, there’s one missing. My mate Gert’s car just didn’t make the deadline for this issue, but on the plus side, it gives us another chance to put his 800hp Mitsubishi Lancer Evo on the cover is all it’s carbon fibred up glory. The four-wheel drive cars we do have are as equally impressive, like the R33 on the cover. We have the great Robert Mugabe to thank for that one.
Thanks to him turning Zim into a role model for the South African government, many residents moved into our borders. Some of them brought serious import cars along, and Nick Keown went one better and brought a tuner, Steve Clark along too. The No-Sweat tuned Skyline is the fastest four-wheel drive in SA at the moment, crossing the traps in the low 10-second bracket. And it’s fully street legal too, ask me, I know. I had a short stint in the passenger seat on the day of the shoot, and like I do with most people who ask how it was, I’ll give you a clue… If Horatio Cane pulled out some or other fancy CSI crime fighting tool, it would clearly show up fecal matter on the seat! Accompanying the R33 is another R33, but just a small piece on it, well more the driver really. We tracked down the man with the highest officially recorded speeding violation to get his thoughts on the matter. We have a bunch of info on the GT-R, Evo and Scooby histories; it’s great stuff that will make you the master of conversation at the next braai. To go with this we let you in on the quickest four-wheel drives, both internationally and locally.
Speed and Sound HQ – It seems that on their way out, our excompetitors felt the need to feed their readers some bullshit and take a final dig at us. Well, the last magazine standing is actually the one to get the last laugh. In his final editor’s column, Ashfaaq Bux said; “There are a few reasons for us shutting down so early in our life, and I hate to admit it, but the suits do have a few valid points. Wesbank is history, the law is becoming ever more stringent on modded cars, emissions regulations will soon be a curtailing reality and the retail industry is literally on its knees”. What the hell does that mean? The suits’ are right? Are these the same suits that are under the microscope for allegedly defrauding advertisers by manipulating print and distribution figures to make a buck? Pull the other one, no really, please, it’s a little stiff.
Yes, it is a sad fact that Wesbank is history, but you know what, that’s a cop out of note. We were here before Wesbank, and we’ll be here after Wesbank. I’m also left to assume that with regards to the law they just threw in the towel, waved that little white flag and jumped ship. Why not stick around and help the modders out by giving legal advice and the right way to do things? That’s what we’ve done for years, and what we will always do. We’re not bailing out on our readers. Then I came across something one of their staff members, Sybrand Mostert, had to say about their last issue. This was his little rant: “But perhaps the greatest contribution from Max was that the awful Speed & Sound had to up their game considerably. If one looks at a Speed & Sound two years ago versus now, the readers are the true winners. Will they keep up the standard? Or survive? We shall see.” Not sure if we should be flattered or take offence, but I’ll settle on the latter.
