The day has finally arrived that we get to see the all new, beautiful 2016 Mazda MX-5.

A few weeks ago, we reported on the first teaser image that the Japanese automaker showed us, but, today, we can finally see the new car in all its glory, The 2016 MX-5 was officially unveiled on Wednesday.

Mazda has said that the idea with the 2016 model, was to bring it back to it’s roots. And by roots we mean size and weight. The company said that they wanted to make their latest model similar to the very first one, which made its debut 24 years ago on 1989. So taking a cue from that year, the new MX-5 is set to be lighter, but still very fast.

The car’s predecessors were a lot heavier and bigger than the 1989 model and the new one.

While Mazda hash;t released the exact weight of the car, sources claim that it is about 220 pounds lighter than it’s predecessors. Which, in our opinion, is a good thing.

The 2016 MX-5 also features all new SkyActiv technology as well as keeping in line with Mazda’s Kodo-Saul design language.

In a surprising move, the automaker has not revelled any engine specs on the car. Which of course is highly unusual. However, it should be in line with the previous MX-5 models.

Experts say we can expect a 1.5 and 2.0 litter engine, oat probably with a six-speed manual transmission. There has been no mention of an automatic transmission as of yet.

So, dear car lovers, take a break on your Friday afternoon and check out the reveal video below.
