The New Zealand-designed Saker GT race and trackday car (above) has gone on sale in the UK through Dragon Autosports Ltd. The Saker has a Subaru STi flat-four mounted amidships, a tubular steel chassis and fibreglass body. It weighs just 765kg in race trim and its boxer engine produces 320bhp. Performance will depend on gearing and engine spec (upwards of 400bhp will be available), but expect 0-60mph in around 4 seconds and a top speed of 160mph or more.
A road car is undergoing SVA testing, but it will remain a stripped-out track-biased machine, though air-con and other creature comforts are being investigated. In race form the Saker GT costs around £33,000; for more info go to reddragonautomotive.com

If you’ve modified your car with audio and the likes, you should enter the MAGP.

Mobile Audio Grand Prix is a platform for people, who spend hard earned money on their sound systems and modified cars, to get recognition for their efforts.

All contestants will be escourted through the testing process, offering a great deal of education and guidance for future upgrades and improvements to his/her modified vehicle.

The cost to enter the MAGP is R250 for the weekend, which includes:

1. MAGP Cap
2. MAGP Certificate
3. Display area for your vehicle
4. MAGP Audio CD with competition rules
5. A one-on-one session with the MAGP judges

How to drift like a god!

What is drifting?

Drifting refers either to a driving technique utilizing a difference in slip angle between the front and rear tires of a car, or to a sport based on the technique; this article deals primarily with the sport. When the rear wheels are slipping at a greater angle than the front wheels, the car is drifting, or “power-sliding”. The rear end of the car appears to chase the front end around a turn; the driver utilizes both front tires and the rear tires to control the actual direction of the car. More throttle induces more rear wheel slip angle and the rear of the car wants to overtake the front. The goal is for the driver to achieve opposite lock and use the throttle to fine tune the car’s angle and direction. (source)

The most important part of any drift… is the car! With an amazing collection of cars to choose from its hard to say which car will be best for you.

Nissan 200SX

Hit any drift event and the 200SX will be as common as my Aunt Sophie. That’s no coincidence. The 1.8 (169bhp) or 2.0-litre turbos (197bhp) look good, are reliable and hang their arses out more readily than Soho rent boys. 1989 – 1994 S13s offer huge value. R24,000 will get you one in mint condition. 1994 – 2001 S14s, meanwhile, rarely top R91,000. Allow at least R9,000 for an uprated diff, coilovers and an extra 100bhp. Or import a spec R S15, which features R33 Skyline suspension and brakes, a better diff and 250bhp.

Nitrous & how it works

Say the words “nitrous oxide”.

Some people will think of jabbing a button and leaving your spleen behind as massive acceleration shoves you back into your seat. Others will think of shattered con rods, mangled pistons and huge repair bills. (Some might even think of yellow balloons and laughing fits, but that’s for another blog.) Here at the Atomic Labs we just love the stuff.

Blue bottle yumminessNitrous oxide (N2O) was discovered by Joseph Priestley in 1772, and in the 1790s Humphrey Davy tested the gas on himself and some of his friends (hmm, what’s this stuff? I know, let’s sniff it…). The first practical application of N2O was as a medical anaesthetic and painkiller. The German Luftwaffe experimented with nitrous engine injection in World War II, which allowed their planes to fly higher than previously possible. But with the advent of jet engines, the project was shelved. After some stop-start forays into motorsport, nitrous became mainstream in 1978 with the formation of Nitrous Oxide Systems Inc.

Enough history. So how does it work? First off, nitrous is not the engine-destroying monster as many people believe. When installed properly and used sensibly, there is little or no engine degradation. And by itself, nitrous oxide is *not* flammable or explosive. That scene in The Fast and The Furious when the car explodes in greenish flames is Hollywood crap.

Tarlton Raceway Time Boards

Round 5 of the National Drag Racing Championship was held at Tarlton Raceway on the 5th of August. All in all it was a fantastic day filled with thrills and spills, and of course in the end, good drag racing with a total of 8 new records set on the day.

The fastest time of the day was set by Mick van Rensburg in a Jet Dragster, yes, a Jet Dragster, he flew over the line with a blistering 6.889 seconds at a speed of 408 km/h. (more…)

Bounce Up and Down for Angles Galore!

Now you can go to a car race and see and hear just about everything that’s going on with Kangaroo TV, a handheld device that can stream 10 live MPEG4 video channels along with audio feeds and data. It’s being rolled out first at racetracks, where fans like to hear the radio chatter between pit crews and drivers, as well as keep tabs on the leader board and see sections of the track that aren’t visible from the grandstand. Using Kangaroo TV, they can receive multiple streams of data while choosing between various camera angles, including in-car views.

Montreal-based Kangaroo TV rents out these units for $50 a day or $70 for a weekend at NASCAR races, where the product is branded NASCAR Nextel FanView. The units are also being rented at Formula One races and the Champ Car series. The company has plans to expand its service into other sports where spectators need to see multiple locations to tell what’s going on, such as skiing and golf, and also plans to cover basketball, football, baseball and many other sports.

I think it’s amazing!!!

All-Terrain Hyanide Concept

This impressive monstrous motorbike is not just one-of-its-kind in its deadly-looks, the bike functions likewise too! The mutated motorbike can not just fire-up the road, but it can go-anywhere in deep mud, on rough terrains and even snow…it can ride smoothly anywhere! The rough-and-tough bike concept is titled the Hyanide and is designed by German designers Oliver Keller and Tillman Schlootz for the 2006 Michelin Challenge Design. The Hyanide is designed to run on a flexible rubber tread that spans the machine’s entire underside. So if any part of the bottom is touching the ground, the Hyanide should be able to move, no matter how deep the quagmire, or how rough the terrain. The tank- cum-motorcycle has a top speed of 75 to 85 mph and it features a 60hp 500cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. The only thing you would hate to know about this ultra-cool bike is that it exists only as a one-fifth-scale model, and Schlootz and Keller have no plans to bring a production version to market. So, if you are enthralled with this rocking bike concept then keep your fingers crossed for the Hyanide’s unique drivetrain impressed the big shots of the automotive-industry at the Challenge Design.
