Did you know that European-market version of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, goes by the name of Opel Ampera? Expected to debut next month at the International Auto Show in Geneva, spied pictures of the Ampera prototype just leaked online and from what we see it looks like a production ready five-door hybrid. A damn good looking one. Using GM’s “Voltec” plug-in hybrid system that is powered by a full-time electric motor with a small gasoline engine/generator, Ampera is expected to range up to 500 miles (800km). Definitely in love with the sleek and stylish design, all we know for now is that it’s expected to go on sale from 2011. Now that’s some real competition for Toyota’s Prius, isn’t it? Those greenies that love a powerful ride that won’t harm the environment should definitely be happy to know that the new Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid is slated to be produced starting from 2010. And when we say it’s powerful, we’re not lying. Thanks to a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine (borrowed from Audi) that sports 333hp and 324 ft-lb of torque, it ges naught to 100km/h in less than 7 seconds. As for its hybrid counterpart that doubles as alternator (with a 38 kW NiMH battery) is a three-phase synchronous electric motor that outputs 52 hp and 221 ft-lb of torque. No real specs on that green behemoth but rumors have it that it will probably eat less than nine litres of fuel per 100 km (26 mpg).
Honestly, Hyundai is not the company and SantaFe is not the model, that I would have expected to see entering the hybrid-electric game, but now that I know it’s for sure, that’s a nice surprise.
Dubbed SantaFe blue Hybrid it’s the company’s first to use the new family hybrid system. It uses a 2.4 liter gasoline engine geared to a six-speed automatic transmission and a 30kW electric engine that also works as a generator to charge those 270V lithium polymer batteries. That has taken the CO2 emissions down to 148 g/km and fuel consumption to 6.2l/100km.
But it’s still a hybrid and I guess you’re expecting less performances? Well if you do, you’re dead wrong because that thing goes from 0 to 100km/h in 10.6 seconds. Other than the three-piece panoramic glass roof with UV protection by Magna Car Top Systems, the new SantaFe blue Hybrid is no different than the other SantaFes.
PSA Peugeot Citroen just managed to amaze everyone at the Paris Motor Show the other day, when they showcased the new all-wheel-drive diesel-electric hybrid powertrain called HYmotion4. It’s already used on the Hypnos and Prologue with a 2.0-liter HDi diesel engine with FAP particulate filter for the front wheels and an electric motor for the rear wheels – that outputs 200hp, a six-speed automated gearbox, a 68 mpg fuel efficiency and only 109 g/km of CO2, that sounds like a deal.
However the newest RC Hymotion4 concept (in the pictures above and below) is a four-door GT that sports a total of 313 hp from a 1.6 litre THP engine that outputs 218 bhp and a 70 W electric engine that sports 95hp. All these with only 109 g/km of CO2 emissions that will “eat” 4.5 litres of fuel for every 100 km. Oh and if you were interested in knowing how fast it is, it does 0 to 100km/h in just 4.4 seconds. Great for a hybrid, right?
Only 1 month ahead of the Paris Motor Show, we have a lot of concepts bursting like popcorn. The French from Citroen are preparing the new Hypnos Concept (is that from hypnosis, are you feeling hypnotized?), another great model when it comes to its design. Built as a crossover with BMW X6 flavor, it has the elegance of a saloon and the space of an SUV, which is great.
The new Citroen Hypnos is going to focus very much on lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and the company managed to do so even if it uses a hybrid 200bhp(147kW) engine – 4.5 liters/100km and 120g/km of CO2. Looks great so if you’d like to know more, let’s wait till the begging of October for more info.
If you are the rich treehugging type, read Hollywood celebrity, there’s a new car, the Honda Clarity. For about $600/month lease, the zero emission car will be available in southern California, which surprisingly not is home to most Hollywood celebs. Honda is expected to make from a few dozen to 200 of the vehicles available. Jamie Lee Curtis, Laura Harris (Laura who?) and filmmakers Christopher Guest and Ron Yerxa are among the first customers.
Honda says the Clarity is times more efficient than a gas-electric hybrid and three times more efficient than a standard gas guzzler. The biggest challenge is not the $600/month lease which includes maintenance and collision insurance, it’s where to fill the thing up. There are stations in Torrance, Santa Monica and Irvine, CA. These locations helped Honda decide among the 50,000 applications who would get the car.
Honda has plans to launch a gas-electric version of the Clarity as well as hybrid versions of the Civic, CR-Z and Fit compace. Honda, like another Japanese car maker, Toyota, is decidedly a leader in ‘green cars.’
Geneva has all kind of goodies this year. Here is Automotive Designer House Giugiaro that came up with the Quaranta hybrid concept that almost killed a few of us when they unveiled it. The new Quaranta is using a Hybrid system that was developed by Toyota together with Honda and is actually based on Lexus’ RX400h Hybrid Crossover.
Giugiaro Quaranta is running on a 3.0L V6 engine that sports 286 bhp and 288 Nm of torque, is able to go 0 to 100 km/h in about 4 seconds, uses Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system and a CVT transmission. These are all great specs and I don’t think much could be said about the exterior. Yes it’s true Quaranta is a little low but the smart suspension can raise it 230mm if needed. The roof seems to have solar panels to charge the batteries and power the electronics it has inside.

From an interview with Automotive News, Mark Turner with Honda UK just said that the new Honda hybrid coupe is going to cost from 25,000 Euros to 28,000. Honda aims at selling from 400,000 to 500,000 hybrid units per year and Honda CR-Z may be their flagship, with Europe the biggest client. This is why, Honda is ready to consider customer influences on the design, but not very far from what we’ve seen before.
Rumors also say that a full-petrol CR-Z is going to be built.
