The Volkswagen Up prototype was spotted at a testing session in Europe. Also known as the Lupo, the car seems to be much further along in development since it was last seen hot-weather testing in Death Valley.
In the photos that were snapped, it was hard to see a lot of specifics thanks to the heavily camouflaged exterior, and fans will continue to be in the dark for now regarding what design elements from the earlier concepts will finally be featured on the car.
Details on engine options are available – it is likely to have a 1.0 liter, 3-cylinder petrol/gasoline engine with 75 PS (74 bhp / 55 kW); also making an appearance is a 1.2 liter TSI with 86 PS (84 bhp / 63kW) in addition to a 1.2 liter diesel unit also with 75 PS.
The Lupo is a minicar – that is placed under the Polo in the Volkswagen line up. The auto company says that an electric version of the Lupo will also be made.
A preview of this model, concept E-Up – had a 60 kW electric motor giving 210 Nm of torque. The Lupo/Up will be out in 2011 as a 2012 model. It will come as 3-door hatchback and an extended 5-door hatch variant will also be offered.
