The next-generation Mercedes-Benz ML-Class is currently going into the final testing stages. Recently the vehicle was spotted while it was being tested to see how it measured up against the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5.

These two vehicles would be the biggest competition that the ML-Class would face in this segment, and engineers would naturally be keen to see how the next-generation vehicle would fare when up against them.

The pictures were taken in Southern Europe, where two ML prototypes in deep camouflage were seen when the entourage was taking a break from testing. The vehicle seems to be a bit lower than its forerunner.

Set to debut as a 2012 model in 2011, the ML Class is likely to have engine options that include the 3.0 liter V6 diesel, a 3.5 liter gasoline/petrol V6 and a range-topping 5.5 liter V8.

It is likely that a hybrid variant will also be available, with the company saying that a plug-in hybrid variant is also being considered.
